Sen. John Cornyn appeared on “This Week with George Stephanopoulis” this morning to discuss Obama Supreme Court pick Judge Sonia Sotomayor. He debates with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY). You can watch the segment here.
Afterward, Stephanopoulis zoned in on what could be the most important issue of the entire confirmation process: the filibuster. Cornyn, not wanting to put too much on the table this early, was noncommittal.
“I’m not willing to judge one way or the other, George, because frankly we need to not pre-confirm, and to give Judge Sotomayor the fair hearing that Miguel Estrada and indeed Clarence Thomas were denied by our friends on the other side of the aisle,” Cornyn said.
This is such a tricky political situation. Republicans are in the process of trying to repair a relationship with the Hispanic electorate that largely left them in 2008. So vehemently opposing her looks bad on one front. And yet there are videos out there like this that basically show a woman who’s advocating (buy saying she’s not) the position that policy is made in the appellate courts. And then laughing about it.
Caution is good. A crystal ball would be better, though.
